We use to have something we call shareware?

Sure you can give and should free samples but make it 30 days free trial or almost useless striped down to barebone version to give some feel of thing to come.

The problem is, script owners care more about keeping backlink in attribution than get paid. You don't give away 10,000 copies for free if you smart, you make sure that all of them stop working in 30 days and you get at least 5,000 x $20.00 for each. Now that is smart business.

You know like Gun with blank bullets :)

I'm really don't understand how you can compare giving a free directory script to folks, and giving away free guns. Enlighten me! Unbelievable.

Well, because you’re the only one who has problems to grasp the parallel.....

There are thing that shouldn’t be given away for free in order to avert people with little or no understanding of rationale from creating chaos on cities streets or on Internet.

No one will give away free guns because producers would grasp what may happen if every licensed moron gets position of one.

Giving away free script to every moron with domain name happened to be as bad idea as free gun idea because as we all now know it created condition where Internet start choking from stench created by spam infested mushroom farm directories all 50,000 plus of them.

Now, what else you don’t understand?

They do know what they're talking about, and their arguments all valid. I just think some of their hate for spam directories is misguided to directory scripts. I hate spam directories just as much as the next person - perhaps more - but I don't believe the fault is on script owners.

It's as good as blaming hosting companies that allow you to have unlimited domains hosted for $2.99/mth, or .info domain name purchases for $2.99. Or blaming the directory lists that include & send them traffic, vital to their life. Or the people that submit to them. Or the people that go to them and for some reason end up clicking their adsense. Or DP for sending them a tonne of traffic when they advertise here.

There's a tonne of people you can blame, it's just directory software is an easy target. Despite the controversy and the misguided feelings, a script provided free doesn't make it a bad one. Shareware is an interesting concept that you don't see often with PHP scripts. It might be something to check out for the future - but for now providing a free version is a really good way for an unknown script to get the word out.

Heh - I wish I had that many downloads fastreplies. If I did I wouldn't need to be providing a free version ;)

    @Snowblind1

You got it all wrong :)

$400 script we're using come as 30 days fully functional free trial version.
30 days more than enough to make you mind not only if you like the product but also to make decision if you want to continue with directory in general.

Most of directories get abandoned after 30-60 days anyhow and the rest when $1 domain on free web hosting expired which make no good for you anyway because your client gone forever. But if not and Bozo stick around for another year, your free software will be used without any benefit to you anyhow.

Taking to consideration who is using directories, I don't think they care if script is full of bugs, lacking mods, generate errors etc. Just check 10 randomly selected directories, and I'm talking 2-3 old directories and see if they have Description and Keyword Meta Tags.

You wanna give away your Directory script for free, fine with me but...how are you going to make any money if they going to use your script forever and never come back to you for more?

    ;)

But providing the free version isn't done in the hope that they'll like it so much that they'll decide to purchase it. It's not about search engines counting the link down the bottom either. It's about word of mouth. It's done in the hope that they'll tell someone about it, or others will see it being used & want to check it out as an option. My marketing budget is basically what I find down the side of the couch ;) Word of mouth is what it comes down to - and that doesn't cost a dime & is worth providing a free version for. At least to get it started.

I'd love to make it shareware, & intend on doing so once I've got a steady amount of traffic & downloads. Until then though, the power of word of mouth can't be under-estimated. Even if it means a few lucky people get it for free :p

You will put words into the mouth when you make your directory script stand up above the others

    Check your couch again.

I believe it does, but I can say that as much as I like to little effect. Other people using the script and saying it makes sales. :)

Thanks for the link purchase! I also sold a paid licence for the script yesterday so the couch is starting to look good this week. Heh :p

    Heh, will do.

Oh and by the way akashvista, if it's just a list of directory software you're wanting I'd recommend checking out somewhere like Hotscripts. There's tonnes of options available & when it comes to scripts they generally have a pretty exhaustive list.
