Drupal is the best CMS for social network, unlike Joomla, Drupal provides this type of feature in core. But you will need to have more php knowledge to use it well.

TYPO3 does a good job too with the right combination of extensions. Here's a demo.

I think it depends on your of site. You can use both Joomla and Wordpress as your Social Network web site.

Some of the social networking scripts mentioned such as using Joomla, Drupal, Elgg does not seem to easily support having pictures, videos and music sharing which is something I am looking into. The only one left is Dolphin but I kept reading how buggy it is which is why I have not pursued this project of mine further.

I am presently about 60% sure PhpFox can fulfill my needs but am researching more on Rayz too. If anyone who have experienced with the latest versions or even Joomla/Drupal, please do share your thoughts.

    Cheers!

I made a site for a friend with joomla and using cb among other features.
have a look at http://beautometer.com. I used a few commercial components/moduls/plugins for less than $200 including the template. It does almost everything. The profile pages look even more compact than in facebook, hi5 etc..

That's not right. You can buy high quality video components for less than $ 50 for cb. Free versions available don't work though. - Work only in content with a video bot but not from within a profile.

Rayz I tried and even paid to take off the ads just to find out that it is just for one section to take off their ads. If you want to take off all the ads you will have to lay down around $1500 for them and still have a lot to configurations and to adjustments to do. Also very buggy.

Thanks Arnie for your sharing. I had a look at beautometer.com but the videos and pictures are quite hidden and it seems the videos are embedded rather than uploaded by users/members. Do you know of any sites that are running with Joomla which has a full fletch community sharing features which includes the following: videos, pictures, blogs, forum, classifieds, music, groups, polls and games?

I'm using only the free embedded video plugin version with joomla. There are various options for forums and blogs to combine with the project. I didn't enable them either. But try to go to joomla.org and look at the extentions, especially those from mike.simbunch for video options and others. Over 120 plugs, most of them are free. Plus all the other extention for joomla like auto backup and so much more. You can customize your site with all the options perfectly. If you plan to use the latest joomla 1.5.3 you won't be able to use all usefull features for a community site. Think that will b e all available in a couple of months. You can use version 1.0.15.

Typo and Drupal are more technical and complex IMHO
Wordpress as a social network ? Not likely
Joomla is easier and has the largest developer base so you will find a lot of stuff for it in Community Builder.
But it all takes a bit of work.
The integration of a good forum with perfect skin is always a challenge.
Get a good css / template person to make this look good.

I've been hearing more positive comments about Dolphin lately. I think it might be worth checking out. Personally, I don't care about having tons of features, like many (most?) other people do. I just want the framework for a simple social network with "standard" things like tags, a personal blog for each member, a classifieds section, etc.

Never heard of it. What kind of a community is behind it?
I think that's the most important part of your choice.
It's not about the bells & whistles, but when you have a problem, you have to have a place to turn to for help.
As long as there are lots of people involved who are helpful, then you are set.
