Personally I don't think language is a necessary to create a website .
I prefer to focus on design and html/css rather than languages .
There are already tons of php based cms that is ready for sites .
IMO, If you focus on languages you are a programmer rather than a web designer .

There's only one language for web construction: (X)HTML.

If you don't need anything special, it would be the best to go with pre-made CMS, like Wordpress, Joomla, etc...

Other than that, HTML is your best choice for simple website, after that I would go with PHP...

IMHO 'best' is inversely proportional to 'easy'. Trying to combine the two is a recipe for disaster (see Ruby on Rails)

Easy means sleazeball shortcuts, fat bloated code, maintennance hell, cross browser disasters and a whole host of other things that are undesirable in a production website (yet run rampant over 90% of the web)... Same type of sleazeball shortcut that off the shelf CMS systems tend to be, most of them written by people I'd not trust to code thier way out of a piss soaked paper bag with a hole in the bottom. (Yes turdrpess, I'm looking at you and your shiny pwnie)

There's a reason it's called "work" after all. Trying to make it not be work is just asking for the internet to **** on you.

btw, .NET is not a programming language of any kind. So anyone suggesting using it obviously knows nothing about it.

    Correct, and neither is ASP.

.NET is a VM on which code can run like the JAVA VM - which is why there are all sorts of different programming languages you can use with .NET - C, Pascal, Javascript, VB

.ASP works similar, it lets you use other non-web languages like C, Pascal, Javascript or VB for web development - which is a curse and a blessing since someone asks you to work on a .ASP site, you have to ask 'so what language is it written in'... and if they answer '.ASP' you walk away as they don't know enough about their own site to be worth working with.

Not true. Every page I see is written in HTML. Browsers CANNOT display ANYTHING written in .net.

HTML, CSS, and creativity. Using w3schools.com you can pretty much hammer out the technical aspects of both languages fairly easy. Worst case scenario you can shell out $2k for Adobe Creative Suite 4, and use Dreamweaver with Photoshop. If you are creative enough, you can pretty much use notepad, and find a free image editing tool.
