    I think the best alternative for both adsense and adwords is AdToll . You will see dramatic increase in your earnings. Other great news is today AdToll is acquired by US company.

    Why not to find advertisers yourself? Maybe you can create a special page on the site describing to advertising options - banners, paid links (if you agree), paid articles and so on.

    Yeah I would suggest to you affiliate program, because i don't think that the best alternative of adsense is available so i would suggest you affiliate program.
    You should choose a good affilliate network and find a best offer that is related to your site/blog niche such as education loan offer, books, stationary product,etc.
