I work in the sports betting niche. For a couple reasons. 1) I've always been interested in it. The old saying.. do what you love and never work a day in your life? 2) It's profitable. People tend to be willing to spend money to make money, even in a down economy..
It doesnt really matter what is the most paying online business because if you dont have a business plan for that business you're not going to succeed. Just cuz porn business is profitable doesnt mean that you can just go and open a porn website and start making millions of dollars. You need to know what you're doing and have a plan....marketing plan is very important.
I think this is the best advice in this thread. Niche matters..but what matters more is your business plan and the amount of work you put in it ..

Focus on something you're interested in over the long term and build up your site. Don't fall for the get rich quick ideas because everyone else is also trying them. Highest paying PPC is in finance, education, law, etc but the competition is fierce!
