Which is more important: onsite or offsite SEO

Can someone tell me which is more important for search engine ranking: onsite or offsite SEO.

I know many will say that both are important, but suppose you are promoting a site on a budget and you have a full-time job (hence time limitation), which would you spend more on: onsite or offsite SEO?

There is no way you can compare any of them. Both of them are important...

Seing as they're both types of search engine optimisation, they are equally important. e.g

Without links, you site is less reputable - rank goes down
without good meta tags and valid html the SE can't read your site properly so your rankings for the keywords you want goes down

SEO isn't black and white, pardon the pun, it is a combination of many things that bring high rankings.

Though if you had to spend more time on one, it woul be onsite as "content is king" and the SE can read the site better

they are equally important. It would be a waste of resources to do off site optimisation when your site is poorly optimised

If you have a budget, I suggest you spend the budget on buying articles. Those better ones for your website. Amend a bit for onpage seo. The shorter ones of lower quality for article submission. In this case, you take care of both.
However, that will depend on what you like to do. Some bloggers are fantastic writers, able to produce a 1,000 words blog post in less than 20 minutes. In this case, spending on offpage seo is better.

As for the on-site optimization just be sure to cover the basics such as title tags (most important element remember), URL architecture etc... Cover the basics and don't lose too much time on less important stuff, focus your self on link building and marketing.

Onpage seo if you think that "content is the king"... but still you need both to rank high

I would say offsite is 80%, onsite is 20%. I can rank a site for a keyword using offsite techniques, even if the keyword is never mentioned on the page.

Both are important, only with on page seo or only with off page seo we can't get anything.

Both are important according to me but its really very tough to bring the site in top only by on page activity.

The consensus is on site optimization counts for 20%-25% of Google scoring, off site counts for 75%-80%. It's important to optimize your web page meta tags(name,description,H1 tag) and to have your keyword in the URL.
Off Page you can make comments on high traffic forums with your website in the signature, comment on do follow blogs, get articles and rewrite them to be at least 70% unique and post them on different sites and have the bio box point to your website with the keyword you're promoting as anchor text. This will get you back links for free.

I believe that No one can give answer proper for this question because there is no standard and unique percentages of particular strategy. May somewhere Professional markets defines that On-Page has 30% importance and 70% Off page.

May Above mentioned perfect are perfect, but i believe that they aren't cause algorithm of major Search Engines are not unique they have changes on different time period.

hope you have gotten what exactly you looking.

First of all you should not be trying to figure out which is more important, because if you want to succeed, everything should be important. And when it comes to SEO techniques ALL are equally important and crucial.
