which is more important? keyword optimization or link building

i wonder if the link building with the right keywords in theanchor text is more important the the keywords contained in the site itself. if the keywords in the anchor text override those contained in the site itself especially for high page ranked sites that the link is originated from ?

Get the onsite text sorted first - you need the keywords on there but in a user friendly way that will sell your service or product. Then focus your link building on these keywords.

Onsite SEO - webpage loading speed; use of keywords; use heading tags; title; metatags; content; image names; alt tags; sitemaps ... etc are one part of the SEO process.

Linking back to your site, a separate SEO process. Reading on various forums though, the use of keywords in the link isn't 100% necessary, though you'll read that it is. The only real way to know is to test. Build some links with keywords, some with out (so, just have "click here"). Depending where you are posting backlinks, and whether these links will be moderated, you are also more likely to get your link accepted. Goes against accepted SEO folklore, but just passing on what I've read. Safest is to do both.

I've read that optimizing your keywords on your site carries about 30% of the weight in the SEO process. Optimizing your keywords offsite is about 70%. So basically,if you get the SEO right onsite, you've done 30% of the work. It will mean you can save on thousands of extra backlinks.

If you ensure the keywords you want to rank for are on your site and fully optimized, then it will be much easier to get a higher ranking when you add in all your backlinks with the same keywords.

I write content for my users, not for the search engines, but thinking about what would users look at my site and get plenty of traffic.

No doubt anchor text carries huge weight.... But I don’t think they can over power other keywords in the website (if you use them in right proportion)

The best practice is to use your targeted keywords in anchor text.
