Hi Frd, right he Said about SMO , SMO is just for the Brand promotion. It is also true that one can get returns with minimum efforts if the tactics of SMO are right adapted.

SEO to build a foundation for organice search engine traffic, SMO for driving non-search engine traffic and PPC if you have the budget and can track and test results.

Personally I think SEO is the more important, as the skills and techniques you learn in SEO can be applied to Social Media Optimization

At first do the SEO, then go for the SMO. Don't go for PPC.

My vote is for SEO. Social Media is also a strong medium, however it depends on what type of services, information or products you are promoting. For instance, a wire & cable retailer will get no help from Social Media to get sales or conversions. It might be of some value to him, but it can't be a reliable source to get sales for a wire cable company.

Posting a question like that in a SEO sub-forum will get you skewed and biased answers and a majority will say SEO, but the future is SMO.

Nothing beats word of mouth marketing and SMO is in may ways connected to it. Post a youtube video up today, get a buzz around it, and it could be on the first page of Google within hrs. The Panda update was so much about user input and social credibility, oh and content of course.

User engagement is mattering more and more. Instead of spending $1000 on PPC campaigns and getting less than a 1% follow through, spend the time or money on outsourcing to actively help out people in your niche, without doing any hard selling. Answer their questions, provide relevant links (not yours), and do all the little things. Listen to your target market and you will build a tribe that will do all the marketing for you.

All of them have their own advantages. Depends on what you want to use it for.

I think its all down to the objective of your site. If you are have an eCommerce site and a site to capture email ids, of course how you optimise will vary. If you have affiliates or ads on it you will just be looking for any related traffic and not genuine leads.
Like I said.. its all down to what your objectives are...

I tell my clients to use a combination of the 3. SEO is going to generate more long lasting results, but is also slower. It takes time to move up in the rankings, especially in competitive niches. PPC gives you the advantage of immediate traffic, and immediate information that you can use to refine not only your PPC efforts, but your SEO efforts as well. SMO is kind of a joke if you ask me. If you aren't going to engage in social media, then don't use it. You just can't fake it and get good results. It's also much harder to gauge social media effectiveness.

Does anyone here that is knowledgeable in SEO still feel confident in it as a long term tool even though so much lays in the hands of the main search engine that you are building for? For example, when Google unleashed Panda this year..

There are no tricks when you do it right.. no shortcuts but.. Do we still have control with SEO?

I think that SEO and SEM both are beneficial because both methods increase our business sales and website visitors. This methods are cost effective and conversion rate of these methods is very good.

it is better to combine both SEO and PPC to maximize the keywords your are using plus a high possibility to get the traffic you want.
