I'd say if you're a PRO, and willing to spend some time learning - ultimately photoshop is your best choice.

I personally use fireworks, because I'm a very basic users and it seems easier for me - but I could be wrong :) Just my thoughts.

    FIREWORKS ONLY

Actually, I also use photoshop :p But for the web, fireworks is so much faster...
It's not so much what program it is as who's using it. I swear i've seen a lot of photoshop loyalist who have really fugly websites. Photoshop is more flexible, that's for sure, but fireworks is aimed squarely at web design and has features photoshop doesn't like automatic multilevel menu creation, faster vector support ...

But if you are gonna make large print designs, you're better off with photoshop because fireworks bitmap handling of large files is bad...;)

I use Photoshop cs. I found that clients that open my work up in fireworks often get a odd color range or view.

I can get more automated action scripts for photoshop then You can dream..this is not so with fireworks.

I've tried all the graphic softwares - Fireworks, Photoshop, Gimp etc. I tested them in features and the image quality and though this question has been asked so many times, the answer remains the same. More people prefer to use Photoshop. I like using both actually. To make a site, it requires more than one program for me. At times you may even have to go back to the MS Paint to hookup a simple pixel pattern. So choose your programs wisely.

I am completely the same way. i used to use fireworks for everything because for some reason it came naturally for me for some reason. lately, when a logo needs to be of high quality, nothing is better than photoshop. Fireworks is great for making small changes to use of the web.

If i had to recommend to anyone here, it would be fireworks. simply because of the price difference and ease of use of fireworks. but if you are doing something that needs to be of very high quality - there is nothing better than photoshop

I also use fireworks because of the integration. One thing that bothered me for a while was it would get stuck in "web safe color" mode and I couldn't select a specific color from a photo - then I realized that it's probably a good feature - I would make some crazy colored pages otherwise and they'd look terrible on 75% of screens. Not everybody has an xvga LCD.

I used Frontpage and Photoshop then I decided to try out Dreamweaver and Fireworks. I only used those for like a day because of the whole "old dog new tricks" thing and went back to frontpage and photshop. :)

I would agree. I use both depending on the usage. I tend to use fireworks for web safe graphics, however I enjoy Photoshop and its awesome abilities as well.
If it is of any interest, much of the the imagery done for the Star Wars Prequels was done in Photoshop, in fact one of the founders of Photoshop is involved in Lucasfilms production staff. Merely for a side note.

Quality is reflected in price. Photoshop + Image Ready win.
However, if you are only creating buttons with your graphic program Photoshop is a expensive way to do it but it's fun.

I agree 100% with this. I can do everything and more with Fireworks and I find it much easier to use. One precaution though. Do not simply draw out how you want your webpage to look and then use the HTML wizard. It sucks and gives crap code.
