Hi, I want to add a directory to my website. I have decided on the script but which would be more appealing? Sub-Domain or Sub-Folder? Would it effect PR / Alexa / SE Indexing ?
doesnt really matter now, google used to take the subdomain as a diffrent site before, now it has changed its algo to take it as a part of the main site,... so no real diffrence where google is concerened. M.
I didn't know that, very recently i was still being told in threads that subdomains were classed as different sites.
I personally would recommend a subdomain - as it simply looks nicer. The other reasons for doing so is that it is unkown whether or not all other major search engines apart from Google see a subdomain as being a part of the top domain. Google changed its algorithm in November 2007 to encorporate subdomains into the top domain - thus you can no longer have a directory in a subdomain and get all the reciprocal backlinks to your top domain to make it appear as if your top domain has zero outgoing links and hundreds of incoming links. The preference is really up to you, but for me, a subdomain is the way forward.

subdomains are treated as seperate sites still, look at free hosts, subfolders add to your sites total page count. my opinion, subfolder every time.
Jamie, how'd you get the insider info from Yahoo/MSN? Unless you care about traffic from Yahoo/MSN (which in most cases is very little!) - do whatever you please, subdomain or subfolder. Google treats 'em all the same now anyway.
Heh Matt Cutts spoke out in November about subdomains. As we all knew, subdomains were treated as seperate sites in the eyes of Google, but that's no longer the case. Whereas nobody knows how Yahoo, MSN and the like all rank subdomains. Therefore it 'may' be best in terms of ranking in other search engines to use a subdomain
I've been in this game long enough to know what's what Spider-Man, this topic is about as old as the hills and you'll see I'm exactly right when I say it doesn't matter an ounce.
Pipes is right. Sub folders are treat as a same-section and links juice flows well onto these. Sub Domains like DP forums are handled differently. They show up in different query searches, like the site: command.
Can you show me some evidence of this mikey? As for the fool who sent anonymous red rep you aren't doing yourself any favours your just re-enforcing that this place is sadly over-run by people who can't stand up to a good debate without thinking they know it all.
What if you have a hosting account that doesn't allow you to have sub-domains, or a limited amount? Again I ask anyone who can provide proof to support the statement that one is better than the other apart from looking prettier then please do.
Site: for DP shows less than 1000 results (for the homepage site) http://www.google.com/search?q=site...s=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a Site: for DP forums shows 400k+ results http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=site:forums.digitalpoint.com&btnG=Search As you can see google is treating the sub domain different to the homepage.
