Hi, i want to use a forum app, been looking at both phpbb and SMF - does anyone know which is better, easier to use and more user friendly? Thanks
SMF too, mods install is very easy and support is very good, v 2.0 is the best, the perfomance is better that vb
Hello I think, this should close now. same question has been asked about million times. It depends on people what they like, SO, tried both yourself & decide what you want to use. Regards
SMF over phpbb any day of the week. Mainly because of the security aspect. Several years ago phpbb dropped the ball in a big way. The forum software along with its modifications are some of the most insecure on the internet. Just a couple of months ago the main phpbb website was hacked through a modification it was running. SMF for the most part takes care of the security issues in a timely manner. If the update is going to take a few days, the developers will usually post a workaround to keep the exploit for working on your forum. Put all of the little details aside. What really matters is security. how often do you want your website hacked, how often do you want to restore from backup, how often do you want your site defaced,,,,,, those are the questions that you should be asking. Right now there are 2 free forum solutions that I recommend, MYBB and SMF. phpbb is not even on my list.
Personally I would say PHPBB, but I have only dabbled in SMF once or twice, I ended up reverting back to PHPBB because it's what I've been used to for years now...
i hate PHPBB due to poor spam control, difficult add on (plugin) ..... SMF is slight easy, just remember stay away from IPB (invision board).
I might have said phpBB in the past but I ended up getting hacked so often I said forget it. If you don't have the budget for vB than SMF is the best choice.
why ? 1. fees. 2. Lousy service. 3. difficult to manage (u need good skill in sql n php). My client purhase IPB board without installation or download, cause he and me is busy with some other stuff after purchase, almost a year later he received email from IPB regarding "soon going to expiry customer support" .. So he try to download the script, guess what ? we can't download the script anymore, so we wrote to IPB customer support, they acknowledge we din't make the download before and request us to pay full prices for new download ....
I think they are both great product and think you should install both and see which one you are comfortable with - that is what I did.
I have two major communities - one running phpBB and the other SMF. The community in my signature has a few percent of their activity. SMF 2 wins, hands down. It's missing post drafts. That's it. phpBB is a nightmare to moderate a large forum with.
