Why would you spend money if you can get links for free. If your goal is to sell products and want instant traffic then try adwords. But if you want natural traffic from search engine then go for free links from related sites.

Its not about free and paid, you need to collect links from relevant page and also some good PR page. That may be either free or paid..

Of course 'paid' alone doesn't mean anything, even though paid links normally have at least a PageRank of 2, 3 or 4 so they have a more positive effect to your ranking then xx more free links.. but that doesn't say there are no scammers around that just sell average 0 PR links for prices at $19 and above.. most directories start as a free service, and shortly after they get enough buzz, they directly switch over to paid submission..

If you are 100% sure about the page rank (fake pr -> pr checker), you can compare the $ fee asked with the time you need to find more free linking offers, and decide then.

If you can gain links naturally, there is nothing like it ;)

Paid links do tend to be of higher quality, because you won't pay for links from spammy sites. Unless you have an extremely brilliant service or site, the chances that a fairly good site will link to you is next to nothing.

Google doesn't know what is paid and what isnt (at the moment), so it doesn't matter. Go for the links that are most relevant and have weight, regardless of whether or not you pay for them.

Duh. Free ones. Because you don't have to pay for them. As an added bonus they come with an ego boost, in that free links are generally given on merit. If you have to resort to paid links to trick the search engine, it's a sign your site sucks.

Paid is better in any case. If you are building links yourself that is. You will not get good free links as you would get paid ones.
The best are natural though and you can get those only if you have cool website. Cool because of good, quality content or cool because of the idea. Simply cool there must be :D

free links are good because you can get the same benefit from paid links and most especially, you don't have to spend..however, the length of time to approve your link and review is longer than those paid ones.
