Which is better: niche.mydomain.com or mydomain.com/niche.html

I am working on writing articles for several niches and my landing pages are on my general domain, as follows: www.mydomain.com/niche.html.
I know the answer most people would give is that it's best to have a separate domain for each niche, but since I am not able to do this right now, I was wondering which is a better approach:
    niche.mydomain.com
    or
    mydomain.com/niche.html
    ?
    Or does it really matter?
When I say "better", I mean which method will achieve the best CTR?
    Thanks!

Due to SEO, I will choose "mydomain.com/niche.html"

    Could you explain why?
Also, does anyone know if the CTR is significantly lower if you point to subpages at a general domain compared to a domain dedicated to the topic? Or would you say they will click regardless, as long as it's a good article and they're interested?
