As the title states what will give you a more positive influence in search engines? Sitewide links or link that are in the context of a related article, post, blog, ect?

Depends. For just PR (to sell links later) go for sitewide.

For serps, traffic, etc, go for content.

Best to have a mixture. Sitent or conwide, that way you raise PR and serps.

I'm not into selling links really, and to be honest, could care less if my PR was 0. What i'm interested in is getting in the top 10 for my keyword.

With this outlook do you still suggest doing both or just content?

In all cases, in the content. A link in the main content of a quality, relevant page is tremendously valuable.

Links in context are more helpful. Because the most important thing in SEO is good content. And if are having links in context (with keywords in anchor text) with high relevancy then it may help you to get higher no. of traffic and good position in SERP also.

Sitewide link is last thing to consider. You priority should be link on relevant context page with few outbound links and high pr. It should serve two purpose
    1) send you traffic
    2) seo

Ok, my concern would be SERP and traffic, cause i do have high PR, so i would go for links in the content, but should I mix my competitors link as well, will that be good or bad??

Hmm, don't forget that there still is more than one search engine out there. I think both types of links are valuable. While I'd guess each content link might contribute a higher value than each sitewide link, you can get thousands of sitewide links quite easily. Getting thousands of quality individual content links will take a lot more time and effort.

So, perhaps, pick up a few sitewide links and then get to work on building individual content links?

Going for a higher SERP is way harder than gaining PR, so you would like to be very picky in selecting backlinks however you do.

I would consider contextual link in that case. Google knows certain type of site-wide links at footer. They won't let PR pass either sometimes.

    Right on. With a business mind, you can also remind yourself of;

Profit (ROI) > Good traffic > SERPs > PR

For hypothetical purposes lets say your going to exchange links with site X no matter what, and you have to decide between one these three methods. Site X is related to your site's topic, but is not a competitor. All else being equal what will give you better results?

    1) Link in the context of a single related article.
    2) Just slapping the link up sitewide in the right column or footer.
    3) Other?
