Which is better: keyword.existing-domain.com or new domain of keyword.com?

So if you want to rank well for a keyword within a six month time frame, would you recommend using an existing PR6 domain and add a new URL of keyword.existing-domain.com ... or register a new domain and try to get keyword.com out of the sandbox - could it be done in less than six months?

trying to get a jump on the SEO contest launching this sunday, eh?

Neither will matter because it's both in context of the domain and they are both considered separate entities.

I've heard people say that sub-domains of existing domains are NOT sandboxed. I'm pretty sure that (yea) come Sunday, I'll do a new domain, but just a thought.

I've discovered a few pages of a few establed sites that were ranking for extremely competitive terms. These pages were not linked to from their own site at all and were only getting maybe one or two PR 1 links from other sites.

These pages were PR 4 and PR 6. They were ranking for big time terms.

You can't tell me that there is no advantage to adding new pages to an already existing site. Now, I'm not sure if it is exactly the same for subdomains though.

So you are saying that "existing-domain.com/keyword/" would be pretty strong outa the gate ... but would be interesting how that would compare to "keyword.existing-domain.com" since both are under "easy" control of the webmaster ... although I guess the former would somewhat inherit the PR power, whereas the later would be consider a new domain, although a sub one.

"keyword.com" is a bit more difficult to obtain since a namespace issue, so almost certainly more powerful in the long-run.
