The only technologies used when designing are HTML (structure) and CSS (visual). Your own creativity comes into play but you must also use logic during the initial designing phase to know what's 1) easily possible, 2) what will require some work to achieve and 3) what is probably out of reach.

Web design is not as free-flowing as water, there are some limitations but with that in mind new techniques are developed everyday. I suggest you seek out one or two blogs from accomplished designers and learn from their techniques, documentation and ideas. CSSPlay.co.uk can be considered very good, though these days it's a little outdated now that Internet Explorer isn't as far behind as it was in previous versions.

Remember to seperate entirely your website's structure (The HTML) from the CSS (The visual styling). This is how web design is intended to be and if you're going to do a job then you may as well do it properly and to the best of your ability and knowledge. By seperation I mean don't leave CSS tags in your HTML, include them via the right markup to streamline your code.

Finally, many people will tell you that designing in Photoshop is the 'norm' or the 'best' way, but it comes down to the preference of the actual designer. Some designers can sit at their computer, design something in Photoshop, slice it up and then code it all together. Others, myself included here, prefer to sketch their designs on paper allowing mobility during the process (you really can't beat finding inspiration in the park or on the train on a nice day). I suggest you find your own method but remember that there is no best - just preference.

    Good luck!

adobe products like photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, flash, and fireworks are all industry standards for design work but none of them are going to produce a design for you or even implement it into a functional website. if you are planning to make it a career choice you may want to lean towards adobe products as it will make an easier transition into corporate marketing.

as others have mentioned you'll need to learn html, css and possibly javascript, asp, php, or coldfusion depending on the type of sites you'll be building.

i've worked in marketing/advertising for ten years now and it seems like everyday there is a new software or piece of technology out there that can help you in some aspect make your production more streamlined.

    hope this helps.

You have to use combinations of different softwares. Website Images designing by Adobe, writing HTML and CSS codes by Dreamweaver. Everything depends on your ideas, the more creative you think the more good website you will have. But not only work on Website designing, content is also very important. Because by designing you can attract visitors for minutes, but by content you can attract them for days, months :) Happy Designing.

As far as I'm concerned, all those programs are only to be used to transfer ideas to the computer and not for creation. You should already know what you are going to create first, preferably hand drawn. When you're pretty much ready to cast it in stone, then you use the computer. Otherwise, you limit yourself and It takes far more time to sketch something out on the screen than with pen in hand.

Sure, Adobe products are fine but again, it all comes down to opinion. You can do the job of any Adobe software using free, open-source software.

Each day i'm finding more and more people using the name 'Adobe' as a victory flag - something to be proud of.... Newsflash folks, Adobe software doesn't make you a designer.

Anything you do for the web in Photoshop is available on The Gimp and the Gimp does it just as well, sometimes better, and for free.

Understanding of the standards, understanding of the W3C, understanding that what you see is NEVER what the user-agent gets given the number of differences in available fonts, screen sizes, resolutions and user prefrences.

Close second place is an understanding of semantic markup and separation of presentation (CSS) from content (HTML).

Which is why to me, drawing some goofy picture in Photoshop FIRST is completely back-assward. It's putting the cart before the horse and usually results in sites saddled with complete accessibility /FAIL/ and broken layouts due to things like px metric fonts, using of non-px metric without planning on that for 20%+ of users that text will grow in size 25%, or things like fixed-height non-tileable backgrounds behind content, meaning the image would have to be edited every time someone wants to make changes to the content length.

Write your content, or at least use a reasonable facsimile of your planned content, mark it up semantically grouped by 'sections' with little to no concern about what the content is going to look like and EVERY concern for what the content IS. (Heading for headings with proper heading orders, paragraphs for paragraphs, lists for lists) - THEN use CSS to create the layout and bend the markup to your will. Then and ONLY then start up the goofy paint program to hang images on the layout.

But it comes down to do you want some pretty picture that's going to look like ass on anything other than your magic combination of 96dpi in your favorite pet browser/OS, or do you want content that works great across all browsers, screen sizes, and accessibility methods.

In other words, the best piece of technology for web design sits between your ears.

Get your hands on photoshop or illustrator and learn HTML. Also like some have said creativity and an eye for good design is what's needed to design a attractive website. I don't know of any program that automatically designs you an awesome that's totally custom.

It doesn't matter if you have the latest technology to design a website or the previous website design technology. It all depends on your idea and what you are trying to achieve. That's the most important key to design a website. Without the idea, all the website design software are useless. I prefer Adobe Photoshop to design a website though. :)
