I need to start doing some video editing and want to buy some software. I heard Aftereffects is good and I heard of Microsoft Moviemaker. I am new at this and would like suggestions for the best video software for newbies.

Im no professional but I do a bit of video editing work every now and then (birthdays, holidays etc.) and Windows Moviemaker is more than capable of meeting my needs. Though after working on various projects I have often found that moviemaker lacked a couple of features that I would have liked to use. My advice would be to start of using that and get a feel for it and then when you find that the software lacks certain features, maybe upgrade to more expensive, well rounded software.

Try out Microsoft's crappy Windows Movie Maker. If you run Windows, you've already got it. It's free, and it's REALLY SIMPLE. It also does most things you need a basic video editor to do. If you're just making garbage to put on YouTube or send to your friends, then it's fine. The only real problem with it, is it's lack of export format options.

Personally, I use After Effects - mostly because I know how to use it, and because it makes sense to me. I used Premiere in the 90s, and it gave me a headache.

Windows movie maker will be just fine for someone that is just getting into editing videos. Its really limited on the "types" of file it can edit. Such as - movie maker does not support quicktime. So if your files are .mov, your just out of luck. The save feature is not very informative, and its easy to save the video so its really bad looking. When you could change one setting and have a nice looking video. Its as if the microsoft developers did not care what the video looked like.

    and movie maker is free.

If you convert .mov files to avi and import them into movie maker, the program might crash. Its not very stable and it can lock up a lot.

i agreed with them using the Movie Maker for the newbie like you.... But if you pursue to higher learning and more attractive videos, i prefer you to study adobe after effects. In after effects, you can do so many things and it so many tutorials in the net...

But for a newbie like you, just try movie maker or you can try Ulead...
