It's too bad that people deal with VPS as a dedicated server I just call it a private shared account where you can customize it for your special needs.
Hi, We have many satisfied customers. Check out our thread for our current offers http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=477881 Thanks Colin
I always tell people not to get the VPS plan 128 for proxy hosting but they do it anyway. It's mostly ment for running server side scripts, mostly popular with the Debian folks. I already explained how things work to the client and disabled as many services as possible for him including optimizing apache as best as I could for the environment. If it doesn't work out for the client I already offered him a refund. And Tech Entrance not all VPS's work the same way, my VPS's are dedicated servers with less resources. I use Xen for virtualization. I'm actually currently hosting someone who normally uses a quad-core with 8GB of ram and I gave him the same specs on a VPS and its working the same . He needed a server quickly because he was running out of capacity. thewird
I'm not making VPSs look bad - they are cool and I was and still using them for my own sites but it's just that some people expect too much from a VPS As you have just said, many of them sign up for 128MB RAM VPS (low cost) then complain about low performance They don't put in mind that the OS and the control panel need more than that RAM - let alone the sites hosted Maybe it's just a lack of knowledge ? things are much different in the admin point of view since the client doesn't usually watch his CPU/RAM usage going up So the VPS will be good intermediate level for a shared hosting client to see things from the operations room
If only ram was cheaper or more per stick. I'd love to offer 1GB VPS's for $15 /month but unfortunetely thats not feasible. I think I'm gonna put a notice on the VPS 128 plan order page. thewird
Anyone would love to but we are controlled with the business costs This will be a good move - like saying 128MB RAM plans are not allowed to host proxies - or are not allowed to have a control panel - or maybe don't allow them to be used for production environment Anything that will put a red flag for clients not to expect much from it
I wouldn't mind trying out the 256mb plan on wdservers.com - I wonder how many add-ons are allowed - Is there any special knowledge that you need to handle a VPS acct ? never done that before. Need a plan like this asap.
What do you mean by add-ons? Even if you don't know anything about management, that is taken care of by me and I help you in any way I can. thewird
Since I do not know much about VPS, I was curious to know what is the approx max amount of domains that could be safetly added (for php proxies) before the server slows.
well, i took 128 ram one hosted 2 proxy sites and those r new sites.. and the ram ran out of memory two times in 2 days my 2 sites were new with not much traffic.. can say NO traffic
I put a note on the main page in red warning it isn't recommended for websites to hopefully avoid this problem in the future. The client was refunded earlier. thewird
With all due respect to ignorance and lack of knowledge for a newbie proxy webmaster. Trying to run a proxy on a 128mb ram box would be like closing all of the lanes except 1 in downtown New York City and then complaining that the traffic is backed up. I mean I run over 50 proxies and any tutorial you read will tell you proxies are very intensive. I mean really, would you purchase an eight ounce cup and then take a gallon of orange juice and try to pour that gallon into the 8 ounce cup and then complain when it didn't all fit? Not trying to flame anyone here, just trying to put it into perspective. I spend $300 a month on hosting and still max my 2 servers out. Its gonna take no less then a 256-512 VPS to GET STARTED. Then if you work at it at all your gonna max that dude out quick. When I started my proxies, I was certainly ignorant of many things, and I am still ever learning. But I went from a 256mb ram vps to a 512 then to a 768 with a burst of up to 4GB ram all in the first month. Then the next month I was at a souped up dedicated server for $220. Anyway, just sharing experience. Thanks for the good reviews anyway, thank you to all for your input. This will help me make my decisions for hosts in the future. MAtt
Thank you Loopline for your last comment. You give an excellent overview of the progression from Starting the Proxy to moving to a powerful dedicated server when our sites become popular. That was a massive growth for just one month. Wow Wow Wow Richie
