There are a lot of services offering you to create blog for free set as sub-domain or sub-dir of the main site. But which of them actually place a link to the new (or hot) blogs on their main page/site, so it gets indexed, without the need of you getting outside links?
A lot of wordpress multiuser sites do so as they run a sitewide tagging plugin that's popular. The default theme also contains code that outputs a list of the latest blogs as well. I tell my own clients not to do such a list. Why? Because all of those blogs are either empty or have nothing but a test blog post.
