I use Invision Power Board. It's user friendly for the members and the ACP is set up well. Also like it for the official add ons by IPS.

Hi Tony84, I was able to breeze through the whole installation part. As you and others mentioned it was v easy
The only thing remaining now is that I see MyBB written in BOLD on top of my forums, How can I remove that to include my own custom name, Any Idea??

I agree to a certain extent too. SMF has a certain cockeyed-ness to it, especially in the admin piece. Having said that, there are skinners who have gotten to grips with the SMF templating system - check out the skins by m3talc0re. IMHO, they are as nice as any skins available for any of the free forum packages.

SMF is easy peasy to skin, granted some things look a bit off by default but an hour or so and you can change that.

    That's the logo.

Go to your Admin CP, and on the left scroll down until you find a category called "Themes". Click on "Modify/Delete".

Choose the theme you want from the list and press "Go".

On the loaded page, find "Forum Logo" and change the path to your logo.

    Cheers,

    BP

I prefer mybb over all the other free ones. It was easier to change stuff and also it was easier to keep spammers from loading up the board.

Is there an award for stupidest post ever and if so are you trying to win it?

I would stay with vBulletin. If your forum is a success, you will ultimately end up wanting to got there... I see it over and over. I started with phpBB and after a year migrated to vBulletin and have been very happy. I personally prefer commercial software if it is available, and you can always transfer your vBulletin license to another forum if you decide to change the forum down the road.

Thanks everybody for your valuable inputs.
Indeed installing and now working on mybb forums is a charm. Other than that you can easily find answers for your general questions in the mybb community.
Now the most dreaded marketing part starts! :)

nice to see you went with mybb im sure you will be impressed, the hardest part i had to get used was making the skin how i wanted, as i was used to phpbb2, however im now pretty proficient with mybb so if i can understand it im sure most people can also.

Like you say the mybb forums are a wealth of knowledge an there are a few users who can answer anything and everything. Im sur eyou will be impressed - what is the site?

Well, there is a little bit of truth to it. Do you think highly of someone using Proboards or Invisionfree? Or even WowBB?

I believe PHPBB should be in there, and not ruin your reputation.

The best is either vBulletin or phpBB. vBulletin has the edge I think with great modification, a great community and the best interface around but the expensive price tag made me reconsider and I went with phpBB3 and haven't looked back. :)

I agree. I'm a user and love of IPB.

But I also have a LIFETIME license from way back in the day when you could pay one flat fee for support and updates forever. Now that they are on a yearly renewal type plan, I would consider other alternatives seriously.

Free - SMF ; Paid - Vbulletin - there are no other options IMO
