When backing up DVD movies what format gives the best picture/ sound quality? I don't want to end up with huge 4 GB VOB files so my choices are the following: VCD, SVCD, AVI(DivX) and WMV or Mpeg

    Thanks!

Out of the options you listed, MPEG gives the best.

I'd go with AVI or MPEG (so it can be compatible with MAC too)

On my software program it says
    VCD /MPEG1

    SVCD/MPEG1

I did some reading and MPEG2 would be the best choice since it gives higher quality than MPEG1 but will use 1.16GB per disc. MPEG1 will use around 700 MB per disc
And I think divx AVI will use around 700 MB as well. I will have to see if MPEG2 is worth the extra space or not.

My choice is AVI(DivX). You can compress a full dvd to a 700 mb file with no loss of clarity(both sound and video). Us e any dvd rippers . they will make the job easier for you
