I've narrowed my keywords down to 2. Now, should I try to SEO them evenly or should I stick with one until its ranked high then go for the other keyword?

I try to do my on page SEO as I build the site realizing some keyword phrases are easier for which to rank. Generally I target multple phrases on entire site and make a concerted effort to target one phrase per each page.

It also depends on the competitiveness of these keywords. One may be more competitive than the other. In these cases I divide the number of backlinks into relative percentages. For example I may dedicate 50% of my backlinks to the more competitive keyword (in my backlink anchor text), 30% to my 2nd, less competitive keyword, and the remaining 20% split amongst some variations of my terms just to mix things up a bit and not look like I'm spamming my anchor text.
