After generating sitemap from http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ and pasting into the sitemap.xml file thru cPanel, the file name turns into File Type: ASCII text instead of File Type: XML document text .
Why is that so and how do we get it right?

Can you not just upload the new sitemap.xml file and overwrite the existing one?

There wasn't any existing file. I created the new sitemap.xml absolutely empty and pasted the script generated from http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ and pasted into the sitemap.xml file thru cPanel,
How come the file name turns into File Type: ASCII text instead of File Type: XML document text then?

    I copied mine via FTP?

Or leave the sitemap.xml file on the root of your domain and open a google webmasters account and it will download the sitemap file automatically.

Open the sitemap.xml file with IE and it if there are errors, it will tell you at the top.

What file extension does the file? Stricktly speaking, the content of the XML file can very well all be within ASCII character ranges (since UTF-8 keeps the ASCII range 0-127) thus cpanel (which I don't really know very well) reports the file as ASCII. Dos Google report any errors when you submit it?

Normal procedure is to generate the sitemap.xml, as you have done. Then simply use an FTP tool to upload the sitemap.xml to your website. Then submit it to Google and Yahoo through your free accounts at Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo Site Explorer.
