I would personally recommend using Wordpress with "woocommerce" plugin. It has already all the functionalities i would need to create a strong e-store, and lots of third party plugins to increase its capabilities as well. Its a safe bet, if you are planning to start cheap. Trust me!

WordPress is (IMO) one of the most SEO friendly CMS around, and it's e-commerce plugin is the easiest to customize. And from what I've understood, egroveforums already has experience with WordPress.

Shopify is also a very good system for drop-shipping or virtual stores. It is similar to Magento but user friendly. It basically walks you through everything.

My choices when building for clients:

Large shop with a lot of products - use Magento
Informational site with few products - use Joomla / Virtuemart

I've looked at Magento and then decided to open my first eCommerce shop with Shopify. I will take a look at Joomla and Virtuemart. Question: are the two that you use for small stores expensive? Do they have a lower end free service?

Shopify is pretty cheap. Not free, but reasonable, so overhead is really low. It was a toss up for me between Shopify and Magento and I decided Shopify was easier to understand.

When it comes to choose ecommerce software for your business. You should be aware that platform to satisfy your every signal needs. I would say the best choice is Magento Plateform, Easy SEO Friendly Url's that attract more potential customers and grantees traffic. Also It has offering wider range of available addons. Which allows to create the interface according to any needs and tastes of a web store owner.
