How many products and what type? Does the site have any other needs, does the customer have a storefront? Is it just an online business?? ...I think those are some things to consider..

I use OSCommerce. It's opensource and has a lot of useful plugins. I think best just depends on what you're wanting. If you want basic functionality then any of them will do. If you want some specific thing, then you're best option is whichever allows you to do it. Look at the add-ons for the various systems.

I think the plugin that some use is called Shopp. DukaPress also offers an ecommerce WordPress solution. Found this plugin as well: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-e-commerce/. Best part is this plugin is free.

Dont forget you can have a plugin customized or a new one written from scratch from places like oDesk for a decent price.

I recently switched all six of my ecommerce websites over from osCommerce to a new shopping cart platform called Zulu Cart. It's easy to use and is fully customizable. There are no templates - your own creativity is your only limitation - and it is super easy to use. Everything can be customized directly from the Admin panel. You never have to go into your cPanel for anything and you certainly don't need to know HTML, PHP or any other programming languages. Like most decent shopping cart solutions, they even have a free trial, so it can't hurt to check it out and see if it is right for you.

Zencart is great. It's dead easy to use, has loads of free plugins for just about any functionality you require and has a great forum where you'll get your queries answered quickly. Also it's free!

I work with Magento in my professional life.. I like it a lot. But I have also heard good things about OScommerce. I think you should try them out yourself, and see which one suits your needs. There are a lot of extensions for Magento that are free.
