ok here is a good preview

phpLD - Most Popular at the moment, tons of template available, and alot of mods / category dumps. Also it is very easy to manage and good admin panel.

Free Version (Its ok but the admin panel doesn't have as much features as the paid one)

Paid Version ($25 with a link back) Good Admin panel ...

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Site-Sift - an awesome script ... Not many templates available, but popotalk aka Jude is coming out with tons so that shouldn't be a problem.

this script is extremely SEO-Friendly ....

    Free to use

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    PhpLynx - New Script

Getting tons of good reviews and quickly climbing the ladder. Mods and Templates are being developed. Admin panel is nice and it is user-friendly.

Free Version and Paid Version Both available

if you want to make a serious directory and are going to promote heavily ... and want to see some good seo results .. go with Site-Sift ... it is very seo-friendly...

phpLD (have tons of mods), but you have to spend extra $$$$$ to get the same rank ............. as of what i believe

Go for your own instincts toufique as everyone of us is bias on here, for free it has to be phpLynx for sheer features but it lacks templates, for a full version every single one of the scripts has merit.

Be careful of hidden costs though as some scripts need mods added which can bump up the price a bit more than you might first want. It really is your call though, and as I said we are all very much biased on here and all have our favourites, (cough) phpLynx is the best. See, totally bias. :D

Good luck with whatever one you choose, as long as you are happy we're all happy.

Like I've said before when doing your research be sure to check the forums for each of the scripts. Look at the ratio of help, mod request and even "I hate you" threads as compared to the threads that discuss growing and promoting a directory. Also look to see how many requests for help are left unanswered. Perhaps if I had followed my own advice (well, no one gave this advice when I asked almost a year ago), I could have avoided having my site hacked.

Which brings me to another point, see if people are talking about the script being secure or hackable - there's nothing worse than building a directory only to have some cretin come along and destroy it for you because of a security flaw in the script.

And as the Phoenix said most folks here are somewhat biased to whatever script they favor. They all have their good points and bad - the trick is finding which of the bad points are cosmetic and which are fatal.

I've used two of the scripts already mentioned here. One I no longer recommend and the other is Phoenix's favorite. ;)

Thanks i almost ordered their download tracker pro script for $35 , i been looking for something like that.

But focalmedia is overall a very costly script so only really serious users should consider it.

Directory script doesn't matter much, what matter is how high your directory can go in terms of quality..

    Use
    PHPLD
    sitesift or phplynx
