lol, no way I would ever try to sit down and figure out how to defeat a captcha. Its just when I read about it, it seemed like lots of the articles I found spoke about how captcha's can be breakable.

It seems very cool though. Credit to WatchOut.

For preventing spam you can use few methods, one of the best method it's that:
set captcha, check over google to have some good generators, using GD.
set trivial questions on the 2nd step.
use payments:) if you like, that will stumble out bots.
And... never set online, before checking.
Another trick for spam protection it's to use a mail checker on form submits.
If e-mail it's not valid, an error will raise.

    Hope my suggestions help you:)

I intend to apply the e-mail checker on my own directory . ( www.new-dmoz.org ) for sanitizing the link subscriptions, even it's a free directory:)

A couple of things to point out because spam protection IS the most important part of running a directory. Auto submissinos and these guys who copy and paste dozens of links at a time are killing the industry.

    1. If you are going to use text questions stay away from math because "two times four equals" is a very easy system to beat. Ask difficult questions like The vice to the third president of the US is....

    2. Why has nobody in the directory industry approached captcha with filckr in mind. This style of protection approaches beating bots with multiple pictures from multiple sources and none are generated using gd. Here are a few examples. Two Crowds & kitten auth { Post a comment here to see in action }

    And about this...
If you are not a newbie in programming, why in the world would you work with a script that is encrypted???? or did I miss something? Would it not frustrate the hell out of you not being able to change your own oil? This is why I have not even tried lynx, and probably never will regardless of how good the spam protection is.

BTW: if someone wants to develop a flickr anti-spam protection ... Shoot me a PM & I'll help hack it in place.

What are you on about? I write Binary and have fun with it, I buy a directory script and have fun with it, we don't all want to play about with scripts and waste time and money besides why fix what ain't broken? What frustrates the hell out of me is wannabe programmers thinking they can rip the shit out of scripts for the sake of it, not that your one btw.

btw if you thought flikr is good this method of phpLynx will walk over it as it can use both photos and text Your examples are okay for someone with perfect eyes!

I code for the fun of it also, I am truly grateful to have such a great job that I love to do. Being a fellow programmer you will agree that the FUN part of this is to find a better way of doing bad things.

I applaud phpLynx as their captcha system, my opinion is it's one of the best on the market for existing directory scripts. But it can be beaten. I refreshed a few times and in only a few minutes I was able to deduct there are close to 10 questions and 8 of them are

I stopped once I got a few duplicates. Decent questions and I assume you can add as many as you want which does give the directory owner the opportunity to come up with hundreds of original Q & A and come up with a very reliably good system. Great job phpLynx. But sitting around thinking of questions all day sounds a bit boring to me as a programmer (and directory owner), and I wanna have FUN! Besides, This can be beaten by scripting quite easily as 10 (or 100) is a very finite number. It would take about as long as it took me to write this post.

Also, You are really missing the point by thinking any programmer is interested in ripping out some part of the program. There is nothing special about your code, you just keep it a secret which builds up a bit of hype for you. Now take a look at this and tell me if I took away from or added to openld? And yes, every script IS broken if it doesn't let me do anything my little heart desires. But again, I'm a programmer and I want to have FUN.

And to speak that this is better on the eyes is laughable, I will post a couple of examples of what I am talking about.

    Ex 1.
Now hook that up to flickr (here's a couple hundred thousand examples of a way to keep the picture random) and let the animal to click be random also and you have a pretty good chance of keeping all bots away.

    Ex 2.
Now these might be hard for young children but any adult should be able to decipher these. This particular example does not do it but I have seen some around that if you can't read the letter you can click on it to get a different one.

    Ex 3.
Very challenging indeed, now break out your perfect eyes and find the arrows for me.

    Ex 4.
Hell, I don't even see a picture at all. It makes you wonder if the last two on my list are trick questions.

Guys, we're living in the future. Why is it that most directory owners are forced to listen to 8 tracks? phpLynx, you guys are jammin' to the tunes on cd's, which is quite decent. But none of those things don't fit well in my ipod.

Again, my offer stands if someone wants to help develop a better system, just give me a PM. I have no problem giving it back to the community. My version will be unencrypted.

This is starting to sound like a pissing contest so I'm going to try to keep the replies short and to the point. I'm not knocking your precious script, to me it sounds as if I'm complementing it over the rest. I'm just saying that it's like calling yourself the smart kid on the short bus.

I'd give a response but you got so much text in your "short" reply that I timed out trying to post so I'll do on for us both. Me a capitalist, that's rich from the one who wants a chopper? I'll stick to the porche matey, more realistic, will you watch the paintwork with the eggs. :D

btw, have you ever tried a milf. ;)

    Nite.
