I have a network of directories - 216 in total. Those directories generate about 175,000 visitors per month and 750,000 pageviews. I am looking to increase the number of visitors to the sites and am in search of directories that I can submit to in order to increase referral traffic. I am open to low cost paid directories, but obviously free is better. Please comment on any directories that you have seen consistent referral traffic from, or if you think i am way off base in my direction let me know that as well... As an act of good faith and to get the conversation started (hopefully) here are the top 10 directories I have received referral traffic from. None of these sites are affiliated with me in any way other than me using them to promote my sites, in other words - these are not my sites. Thanks, Shawn.
I have found that greatdirectories.org as well as getting listed in some of the directories listed in their paid directories list helps me get traffic for my site.
Don't think I got any direct traffic from DMOZ though obviously it is an authority link to your site which is nice! Isn't directory submitting still very effective for backlinking? Thought it had died a death a few years ago...
Depends upon if you are looking for submission traffic or end user traffic. How in the world do you run 216 directories anyway? How many folks are on your staff?
Actually I have had a few successful attempts at being listed in DMOZ, but sorry no traffic... I understand the debate on whether or not it has SEO value but when it comes to running a directory network, SEO hasn't been fruitful for me. The reality is that the high majority of my traffic is coming from people and companies that are submitting links and not from those wanting to use the directories to get to submitted websites. I'm okay with that user base, since I still generate revenue from the visitors that are coming to the sites. Regarding the question on how to manage a large network of directories, it is relatively easy after they are set up properly. I have created an admin tool that will allows me to manage content and ad serving from one location. I also centrally manage analytics to monitor how my traffic is navigating the sites as a whole and can make changes on the fly to all sites at once. The hard part is getting a site set-up to handle the centralized management. After the set up, there isn't a lot of time to invest. Keep in mind as well that some directories are quality directories with only quality links, there are also poor quality directories in the network with low quality links. Currently, I am finding that my lower quality sites perform just as well as my high quality from an advertising revenue standpoint. Thanks, Shawn
