I'm a big fan of the Canon Powershot. I have the A560 7.1 Megapixel version. I think you could step up to the A590 10.0 megapixel Powershot for less than $300

I saw a SLR from Nikon D40 this one will come under $500 ... so I just want to know what kind of camera is this one.

I can expand my budget if this one is good and can go for long period. As this kind of thing you can buy once for 3 to 4 years.

Please tell me about Nikon D40

The D40 is a decent camera. This is the bottom of the rung in terms of SLRs however...I believe there is a D60 and D90. In terms of price, I think its a good deal. You have to ask yourself though if you really need a SLR. If you're hobbyist then I would say go for it, but if you're just a casual picture taker I wouldn't spend the money to get an SLR.

D60 and D90 is not coming under my budget at all. Plus I do not want to have that much advance camera as well.

I wasn't saying that you should get the D60 or D90. I was merely pointing out that the D40 was the bottom of the line in terms of the Nikon D series. As I stated previously, to stay under your budget I would go with the Canon Powershot A590.

    Best for what ???

No Cyber-shot can touch the performance of a Canon DSLR . . . ever.

As a pro I've used Nikons, Cannons and several others. Find a camera that does what you want it to. I have a little point and shoot sony that is good but it eats batteries like I need to invest money in the bunny. I would check to see what batteries the camera you choose uses before I purchase.

Don't worry, my friend. You can always read an honest review on www.kenrockwell.com

He reviews Canon and Nikon products and he will tell you every good or bad products.

Please check here for his review about D40 and find out that this professional photographer is a D40 adorer : http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

And also read that he said D60 is just a joke : http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d60.htm

You can also see details about D90, he recommends this one often : http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90.htm

I hope these links will help you decide which camera will you buy.
