    If it's that big a site, hiring some developers and designers to work for you directly would probably be your best bet. You have a lot more control over what you get that way. (But if you're going to be making that large a site you probably already have people who can assemble a team for you. A single hobbyist isn't going to create a site large enough to need a large team.)

    I've heard countless horror stories from friends who have little knowledge about the field and spent ridiculous amounts of money on web development companies. I agree with Rukbat, personal communication and control that you get with hiring developers is a must.

    As Brum said start small and get to know your coder or team first.
    Once you trust them enough you can discuss bigger projects.

    If you search freelancer in google you will find sites specifically offering freelance services. There is also a offers section in DP that offer such services.
