My Dad is running for a position in his union and I volunteered to make his website for him. I'm just trying to figure out what CMS I should use. Features it needs: A "Donate" function (like a paypal donate widget) A "subscribe" function (alerts members of updates) The site is really going to have 3 main categories His platform Endorsements Misc.
Go for Frog CMS - madebyfrog.com Donation button is the smallest problem, you can integrate it to any CMS/Site.
I strongly recommend Joomla for your dad's website. Joomla has thousands of extensions. I feel that everything you need in CMS is found in Joomla.
Word Press has thousands of free themes and plug ins that will allow you to do what ever you want . Joomla is a very nice platform, but many of the good extensions are commercial, meaning you have to pay for them.
Surely for what is in effect going to be a campaign and personal blog, then use....a blog! Download wordpress and just paste in a paypal donate button - the subscribing is already there.
the CMS does not matter, ask 10 people and everyone will have a different opinion, The cms should not matter as they do all the same thing, it is what you have learnt on and which you find easiest to use. my preference is for wordpress so thats three for wordpress and 1 for joomla... woohoo wp wins over joomla
There is no compression between joomla and wordpress because wordpress is a blogging script so my suggestion is go with joomla.
I will suggest you to go with wordpress, as many themes are available for Political or offcial niches. and it will be easy to use as well. And if you want to go for somthin really professional, than you can also go for customized wordpress themes.
I too love Drupal... put in another vote. But to be honest, for the type of website being described, Wordpress will work just fine, and have a much lower learning curve.
