I want to make a site. Where people can get paid membership based on monthly and yearly. I will provide software to download for members. I need a coupon features where people can use coupon to get discount on membership. Also refferal feature. Any suggestion which CMS can do these things better
I have only used amember with wordpress so far. It has coupons and trials but if you want affiliates you have to mess around with clickbank reoccuring payments which I found a little tricky to understand (still dont use it). After playing with mambo though I like the fact that you can put snippets of content on the front page and protect the main chunk of content inside the membership site. In other words, new posts and material will show up on the front page so people have an idea of what they will get inside. You will need to use a payment/membership service still though.
would it be free to do with joomla or mambo? or would you need to buy a service or script? I NEED a membership site! My goal is to have videos for sale: very valuable videos that can earn my customers money. They will be tutorials, and I will be the instructor. A few videos would be free for download, but most would be payed versions. Buy individually or "subscribe" to view all videos for am monthly fee. Could mambo or joomla do this for free? (like a module they have or something?) I know a site that does this (running on joomla), but I know they spent a fortune on coding/programming etc... Note: I would be willing to pay money for a script like amember. Main thing is I don't wanna spent $1,000+ Also, can amember be used with any site? Any good alternatives to amember? Great topic! Just what I was looking for!
I think using vBulletin is better. Will add a download addon people have to buy paid membership for it.
No need to spend $1,000+ - that would be for custom programming. Go with an existing system, as people here are mentioning.
joomla requires you have some understanding of PHP. I found it really frustrating to change the templates to my own design, but once you get the hang of their set up it is really powerful.
theire are many choices : joomla(the best one) datalife engine wordpress phpnuke Xoops and many new cms ^^
Ive fond myself doing lots of editing in php-fusion and e107 because it is kind a simple. For download sites you can use e107 with the right plugins. its e107 dot org btw
I was using e107 8-9 months ago. there are not much good themes and plugins for it. I think vB or wordpress is better

how much would it cost for someone to get a joomla site running? i would want a free template (that I would try to edit) I would want components that would allow me to sell digital goods also a membership area have it all run smooth. is it easy enough for a total noob to do it by himself? or would I need to hire/?
any example sites or showcase sites? I would like to see what membership sites look like on the different platforms.
