These automated submission sites aren't anymore as useful as they used to be.

Instead, you should create accounts to the Webmaster areas of the major search engines and submit your site's XML sitemap to them.

I usually submit my site's sitemap to Google Console, Bing Webmaster, and Yandex Webmaster.

 

I agree with you that automated submissions can harm your website's rankings but manual submitted websites to good trustful directories and social bookmarking webistes are very helpful.

 

I wouldn't focus anymore on getting backlinks from the article directories. Google doesn't like that type of sites anymore (even it's a domain with a high-authority). These might still be beneficial if are in the same niche as your site.

Instead, I would focus on guest blogging since I consider to be way safer than the backlinks from the article directories.

I don't have anything against the social bookmarking sites though.

 

Guest posting is cool, yeah I use it too but I also do regular social bookmarking from well developed social accounts, it is working too, links get indexed a lot faster and yoy know some quality traffic comes.
