The easiest and free ways to make a website are either www.blogger.com or www.wordpress.com. It's not 'software', but it will definitely allow you to easily modify the layout, add text, add videos, etc.

There is not really free software to build sites.

I am using Notepad++ to code my (X)HTML/CSS/JS stuff... but I am no beginner.

None, and they all suck btw.
Notepad++ will make your coding skills stronger than Chuck Norris himself.

There's no magic software that you can just learn to create a decent website. You need to first learn HTML and CSS to have a good start.

However, if you want to jump start on creating a site and writing content so you can make some money, WordPress is the one you should really be using. It's full-fledged and it's easy to use. Because it's popular, there's lots of free information and tools out there that can help you start rolling.

the online site builder from cpanel is rvsitebuilder.
Other than that, there is weebly that is available in fatcow hosting.

for downloadable site builder software, you can have dreamweaver, frontpage, and many other.

it really depends on your experience level imo. if your new learn a cms like joomla or drupal. there maybe a bit of a learning curve initially, BUT you can do almost any kind of websites you want and the modules / plugins / extensions really make these cms the way to go. now if you know a bit of html / css / php / java then id go with dreamweaver, use some templates as a starting point and work with it from there.

Wordpress Drupal and Joomla are most common site builder.. there are maybe softwares available for site building but the thing is they won't do any good. . . As for me, I use to start from basic- Notepad Frontpage amd Dreamweaver- for Html and CSS and then for flash since I am still a noob about this I just use wix.com for customizing layout while I am still reading tutorial stuffs...:) It's good to start from the basic.

Try Dreamweaver it has a 30 day trial and for a designer it's a great tool since it integrates perfectly whit Photoshop/Fireworks/Illustrator.
