Kaspersky - no hassle and great protection imo, I'd never change now I've found it.

Anti virus functionality depends upon their updates, if any anti virus is not regularly updated its effect will reduced .I've tried so many anti virus but every one has some limitation. Now i'm using Avast home edition that is free and working fine.

IMO, your common sense is the best AV. Do not download nor open any file you are not familiar with and you'll be fine. Although anti-virus programs help protect and prevent viruses, they do little to actually remove the risk. Chances are, if you've got 1 virus, you've got countless spyware and trojans as well. Running an AV to remove these infections is extremely risky, as one wrong move will render your system useless. Bottom line: Be smart.

For free, for home use only, AVG, Avast, Nod32.
In my experience, neither AVG, nor Avast alone have stopped a virus from installing. But both have stopped the virus from exploding and crippling the system. Use either in combination with ThreatFire. That combo works pretty good.
I'm talking about home (free) versions only. Not the pros. Pro versions are different.
Tried 2008 version of Zone Alarm Pro on two different laptops. Needed to remove quickly because both computers became very slow immediately after installing. Nothing against ZoneAlarm, however.

Like the one who said above - Be Smart - I agree, that is the best defense. (But having AV software with realtime protection helps even us "smart" ones at times).

There isn't a best free anti-virus. proof of concept is this application made by a very nice coder. Check it out
    hackhound.org/videos/cc1.6.html
It proves that anti-virus detection is weak. Your best bet is learn how malware works, and then if your in doubt on an application, reverse it and see how it works. your best bet is your knowledge, or you can always run a sandbox. A good sandbox is from sandboxie.com. I hope that helped.

that's all well and good, but who among us has the patience/time to learn all that?

most people can't tie their shoes technically speaking (case in point, IE being more popular than FF) so you're talking about maybe <1%? of PC users that might do as you suggest.
