I am no accountant but I've had a few businesses.

Keep it as simple as possible for your needs.

For my small business I use Quicken Home & Business. Less than $100 and very simple. HOWEVER, if you are needing to do a payroll, it will not be sufficient for your needs. You will need to bump up to the next higher version of quicken or else get someone else to do it (like PayChex or ADP).

Having done payroll many times in a small business, I would look to an outside organization if you need to do a payroll. Unless you really get into it, I find it a total pain to do, and having an outside company do it is a lot cheaper than I would have thought. Plus, there is A LOT of compulsory reporting to be done when you start doing payroll and the payroll companies are already optimized to handle such things.

    Hope this is helpful.
