    Hi,

I am new to this froum. I have one doubt regarding putting the blogs for my site. Please let me know whether I will put the blogs in subfolder or subdomain. That is http://www.domain name/blogs (or) http://www.blogs.domainname.com.
    Which one is best?

    Thanks,

I typically use blog.domain.com but it would depend on your host as to how it is easiest.

I would never use www.subdomain.domain.com. It looks like whomever picked it doesn't understand that www is itself a subdomain. Adding www in front of a subdomain serves no real purpose and actually dilutes any keyword density that you may have within the subdomain/domain portion of the URL.

I would definitely either go with a subdomain:

    www.example.com/ (main site)
    blog.example.com/ (blog)

    or subdirectory:

    www.example.com/ (main site)
    www.example.com/blog/ (blog)

There is not much difference either way. They each offer slight advantages and disadvantages.

For example, Google will typically only show 2 listings on a single page in the SERPs for a domain. But if you use subdomains and someone searches for your "brand" name like "U-haul", this allows you to have more than 2 listing on page one of the SERPs:

    www.uhaul.com/
    www.uhaul.com/finder/
    reservations.uhaul.com/
    jobs.uhaul.com/
    canada.uhaul.com/

This is because the search engines typically treat sub-domains as separate sites. Also you can get additional keywords into the domain/subdomain portions of the URL.

On the down side, because they ARE treated as separate sites, they won't be able to take advantage of the domain authority and domain trust that the main site might have accumulated. Domain authority is based on you having LOTS of inbound links from external sites pointing to LOTS of inner pages on your sites rather than having almost all of your inbound links from external sites pointing to your home page. By putting the blog in a subdomain instead of a subdirectory, your main domain isn't going to get credit from a domain authority and trust perspective for all of the inbound links to your blog posts and your blogs subdomain is starting from scratch building authority and trust.

IMO when faced with the decision of subdomain vs subdirectory, only go with subdomain if 1) your main site already has a sizable amount of content and 2) you have enough content for the subdomain for it to stand alone as a site by itself. Blogs are typically prime candidates for subdomains since you typically are constantly adding content to blogs and will end up with a lot of content. Otherwise if your main site is small or the subdomain you are considering won't have a lot of content then I would generally make it part of the main site.

I will also choose either a subdomain or a subdirectory. Reason for which were the same as the ones posted above. :)

I'd choose a subdomain. But not in a form of www.subdomain.domain.com - isn't that too long? Simple blog.domain.com would suffice.

    I would prefer "Domain.com/blog". That's better, IMO.

Of course, it should be domain.com/blog as blog is updated constantly and thus your site will be crawled more often, especially if you have a static website where you don't add much content over time. On the other hand if you have a website where you add content every day and it's big then subdomain might be a better solution.
