Whether PHPLD will be stable if it has 1 million categories and what is the maximum amount of links it can hold?
I doubt anyone ever tried more then 5000 categories, I don't think it makes any sense to have so many. Probably only David is able to answer to this question. I'm sure they do a lot of testing before releasing a new version.
I think you are most likely to find the answers over at phpLD support forums, or they probably have it included in the features page -- as loredan stated above, I doubt anyone have gone that far - Meti
Im pretty sure they can hold thousands of categories. The database structure is designed to do that. DirJournal has 11,000+ categories, thats the most i know of. Cityjournalistdirectory may have more, as he lists resources by region.
1 million categories... thats a directory I'd like to see, just for the navigation experience of trying to get to a desired category... Regarding phpLD, I would think you would get bored of adding categories long before the software ran out of capacity to handle them
It could be directory of Catagories & Sub Catagories only for all of those people wondering what catagories to load.
2,635,446 is what i had set up as a test. phpLD couldn't handled it without several tweaks. This is the reason why the AJAX category selection was made(because the dropdown would timeout) It's been revised and this was done over a year ago and it should be able to fare much better now, although it will slow down your directory. My mySQL database was 350MB+ and to answer your question; There once was a time where I was the most enthusiastic of web directory innovating owners. i lived and breathed code for betterment, until...well... lets leave it at that.
Anon that is an amazing test that you carried on PhpLD. I dont know If phpLD can handle that many categories, But surely one would die out of confusion to such a big directory and also think abt the editor
I didn't knew that your directory had 10,000 links on day one. Huh? Everything takes time to fill up. We were only talking about number of categories. So where from active links come into play? Please try to keep thread where it is
I'd love to hear from Freewebspace as to whether he actually has a need for that many categories. It's almost impossible to imagine who could usefully need so many.
