They aren't going to drop PR. GoogleGuy mentioned on WMW that at some point they were going to move to quarterly PR updates. Maybe that's what it is.
Maybe publicly showing PR. They cant drop PR altogether as their entire system is built on it, and that was one of the main selling points of the IPO as well.
Hi everyone, This is a question I have been looking for in other forums, since it is my main concern since last backlinks and PR update. On the last BL update some weeks ago, I have noticed a big change in Google, where my Backward Links information was replaced from over 3PR only, into under 4PR. I thought that Google was not showing under 4PR backlinks, but now they are most I got showing, and most (if not all) of the 5-6-7 PR backlinks I used to have, are gone. Has anyone else experienced this?
Another thing, is that if Google updates backlinks every two months, that will not change much from what is happening so far, since I have not seen more than three or four BL update a year. PR update I notice, even less often. The next one I think will come second week of September. I hope before, and that I will get back my higher PR backinks.
I use the PR monitor on the Google's Toolbar, which only gives an indication, but basically what I take more into account, is the Backward Links information, also from the toolbar's i. Is there any other way to see more accurate Page Rank movements? What I would like to know is why Google has replaced fewer but higher (5-6-7 PR links), for lower 2-3 and a few 4 PR BL. Even the DMOZ and the Google Directory ones are gone since the last update. Very strange.
They seem to be updating the backlinks pretty regularly though. Even though the PR isn't showing the effects of gaining links to sites is still making a difference to the SERP's. The displaying of lower PR backlinks instead of the higher 1's are maybe to stop people copying other sites with high PR links. With having less regular PR updates and providing only low PR back links Google would be directly discouraging link building and payment for links. It's just one theory about what's going on...
If a PR0 site has a PR6 linking to it, how much will that site's PR increase? Or will it even increase?
Depends on several things really. The main thing is how many links the pr6 page has outgoing. Generally you can expect a PR4-5 from a pr6 link if there are not many outbound links on the pr6.
Why would the G Toolbar and the Backlink Tracker here, show a PR drop, from 4 to 0, and yet the same site in the Google directory shows the same PR4 status? Which one is right?
I am not sure the directory tracks PR in realtime. It may very well just store the last recorded data from the last pr update in a db. It could be that they are just playing with the PR algo also, and you got caught in it, or you may have picked up a penalty.
I see changes in SERPs as well on a regular basis .... but that's just due to changes in title tags, content etc. and other sites in that category doing the same to theirs. I wonder if the delay in the August update has got anything to do with the IPO? Maybe G just wanted the IPO to go through smoothly before the update .... Maybe, this one's gonna be a controvertial update
