Pretend you lost all your sites and money. You have no profit to start off with except $50 for a domain and a few months of hosting.. how would you start making money online? What tools would you use and how would you find a niche? For most of us newbs here, the SEO lingo means nothing. Real world examples would be very helpful. Thanks!
I'd buy seven domains in the same niche, put wordpress blogs on them, use different free templates, monetize them, make whois private, link them in a mininet, and start writng my own content and articles for ezine articles.
Get a CPanel host and install a WordPress blog after you researched a niche keyword of a topic for which you can actually contribute.

I would get an auto responder, a free report or gift to give away so I can build that list, then find products related to that report or gift to soft sale in my auto responder emails.
LOL, I just blogged (extensively--as in 3,500+ words) about this today, and I don't want to get flamed for a shameless plug so I'll recap what I do--and would do in the situation you described--here: - pick several topics of interest - dissect from them several very targeted niches to focus on that aren't already saturated with sites - purchase a domain for each one (since your budget is so small, I'd go with .info's in this case, but normally would stick with .com's) - create a 1 to 5 page web site for each domain that is packed-full of original and useful content (don't regurgitate what others have written, be creative and original and make sure the content is of value to visitors, it'll pay off in word-of-mouth and free link referrals down the road) - add Contextual and/or Affiliate advertising into the content, don't overwhelm visitors but keep the advertising convenient - submit each site to 6 or more free directories that are search engine friendly to get your URL noticed by Yahoo!, MSN and Google - write 4 to 6 brief and entertaining, topical articles for each niche topic you created a site for. i.e., 1 site ='s 4 to 6 articles, 2 sites ='s 8 to 12 and so on. - submit 1 article for each site topic to 3 or more article directories each day until they are all submitted (for human and bot traffic kick-start) - rinse and repeat These aren't spammy or MFA sites, nor get rich quick fast-tracks, but honest and informative resources on narrow subjects (niches) that if you monetize efficiently should each generate a growing revenue stream for you fairly fast--which you can then use to buy more domains and build more useful sites--and before you know it you have dozens of sites each generating from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars per month for you in recurring income.
