where would this bandwidth be charged to?

I currently have 1/4 rack of local colo with cheap rates on space and high rates on bandwidth. I am debating if I should put my 1U NAS in another facility with expensive space and cheap bandwidth. 90% of current bandwidth use is from the NAS

My question is... If I do what I have described above, will my bandwidth decrease at my local colo location?

Is the NAS being accessed remotely or by the 1/4th rack?
I assume it's being accessed by those systems for storage purposes or is it simply storing the files?

You could definitely reduce your costs if it's just a file server. If it's involved in the other 4 systems as a backend type of situation it may not reduce the costs at all.

    Here is my answer:

if the servers are the one accessing your NAS it doesn't have benefit as it will make it more expensive because it will consume the same plus you add the bandwidth of the other for incoming.

If the NAS is a standalone NAS or not related to your servers this might be ok.

the files are uploaded and downloaded by users... so if the upload was directed directly to the NAS there should be no problem right? Would the files need to pass through the web server to be stored from the end user on the remote NAS? Or in the alternate situation would the files need to pass through the webserver to be downloaded from the NAS to the end user

Monfis: I really doubt that you truly offer unlimited bandwidth.

Only you or your webmaster know the answer to that one. The answer depends on the exact mechanisms you are using for the uploads/downloads, and that was not specified in your post.

Shameless ads everywhere  f'k these people with bamboo!

BTW, you could have a pvt VLAN for the servers and NAS, reducing external bandwidth costs.

plumsauce: by mechanism, are you asking if the files are being passed to the user via something server side or if they are being constructed/called via client side.

the answer is client side, JS is used to call the files.

agnivo007: can elaborate on how a pvt VLAN would help in this situation.

If there is no relationship between the web server and nas other than that one refers to the other through javascript, then yes, you can save money by locating the nas somewhere else.

Thats what I was going to suggest..VLAN saves lots of bandwidth and will reduce costs as well.

Oh! You're gonna do that agni?
