Where to start with CSS?

    Hello guys and girls,

I had a question according to Webdesign.

I'm pretty good in designing websites in photoshop. The problem is that I know very little of html and almost nothing of CSS and I would like to give my abillities a boost.

I'm currently using Sitegrinder(Photoshop Plugin) to convert my photoshop slices to HTML/CSS, yet I feel very limited in doing the things I want. I do not need a CMS or any PHP experience.

I want to ask you where should I start with learning CSS, is there a particular book you guys recommend? Or should I just start practicing and learn from my errors?

And which editing software for Mac do u use? Espresso/MacVim?

    Thanks for you help. :D

**Please move this topic to the CSS section, I wasn't aware it was a different section, sorry!**

For CSS, good place to start with =>
    http://www.w3schools.com/css/
    Code (markup):
See the triangle shaped icon next to sheriff badge icon underneath your post. Just hit that and request mod to move your thread.

    YouTube & Lynda.com are the places to go . A video tutorial is worth 100 e-books .

like was mentioned before, w3schools.com is invaluable for learning both html and css. They've recently updated a lot of their offerings, keeping the learning fresh.

The way I learned was to find a template site, download couple of templates, and simply play. Make changes to the template, and see what happens.

two places that I like for templates are:

http://css.fortypoundhead.com - small selection of lightweight, basic templates
http://www.getfreewebdesigns.com - LARGE selection of basic, intermediate, and advanced designs. I really learned a lot from this site!

Thanks guys, I do experience that video tutorials are a way better way to remember things. And those sites you gave me are pretty helpful dwirch, these open source templates are awesome!

I'm gonna start messing around with CSS this weekend and hopefully I will gain some skills!

Another great site that offers video tutorials is http://apex.vtc.com/css2.php
They charge a $30 monthly fee to be able to view courses on any of their subjects - but also give you the opportunity to get started watching introductory video tutorials for free

I would recommend the Sitepoint courses. I have done the HTML5 and CSS3 courses, as I already had a good understanding of HTML and CSS, and I was very impressed. The lessons are set up to take you from novice to ninja and don't cost a lot.

I've got a big list of possibilities right now! Still w3schools.com is not loading for me... kinda strange.. will look into that later.

I have used Sitepoint before! They offer great Trial versions of their Ebooks and courses with mostly 90 pages or more of info for free. Plus their methods of explaining are kinda soothing and let you know where you are in the process.. So I think will do a combo of things by the end of the weekend.

In the end errors will always come up, but they are a great opportunity to actually learn on how CSS works. I will have to practice practice and practice!

Everyone here who's referenced w3schools is spot on,

    fantastic site, amazing for referencing.

They've published some decent books, plus once you've learnt enough I'd suggest taking their exams, just for kicks ;)
