I have a website about medical suppliers that has been registered a week ago and put up on a server just few days ago with a big database of medical suppliers. it is a php coded website. what should be the first steps to take, to do and not to dos for my website. it has few of its pages indexed already, looking for some advice.
Well, You should have started thinking about SEO before coding it, not now. But I guess without a link there is not much we can talk about.

Hate to disappoint you, but it is far from SEO friendly, besides short URLs, there is room for improvement. 1. No META tags for keywords and description. 2. No DOCTYPE specified. 3. For layout are used tables, that increases your page size A LOT. This should keep you busy for a while.
thanks man, if i wasn't disappointed i wouldn't know any of these. how can i do all these for a website this big size. for instance i am trying to generate sitemap now and even this is taking about 4-5 hours
Well, it depends on the engine used for the web-site. If for some unknown reason you have a static file for every page, then modifying the <head></head> for all pages would be a real pain. If you're using some normal template technique, which you probably do, then just make a small function to generate keywords and description on the fly, and insert it into your head template. Can't say much without seeing the source code of the site.
choose a primary keyword for you and start doing link building, use that keyword in your content, but one thing shud be kept in mind there shud b no keyword stuffing
i have a header.php file containing metas, do you think adding my keywords and description to this file helps.
I suggest, make a blog that has a good presentation which is regarding to your site and product and services. you can put a link there of your site and then send it to Blog Directories and you can even send it to different social bookmarkings...
