Where to point my backlinks?

4 months ago I changed to a brand new domain name, despite a 301 redirect none of my competitive rankings are back, i still get the same traffic though through long tail searches.

Thing is before the change my site was located on the root, now it is located at /forums.

Now in Google serps I see my homepage as the root, it is not listed as www.domain.com/forums, despite the root being 302'd to /forums.

So if Google sees the root of the site as my homepage should i build links there or to /forums where the actual homepage is located.

    Many thanks.

Something appears to be wrong with your redirect.

The redirect needs to be on the old domain so when you hit the URL of the old domain it redirects to the new one and to the directory. If it is done correctly then the old domain will redirect to www.domain.com/forums and the new domain will get the benefit of the old links you've built.

Any future link building you do should be to the new domain and directory where the actual homepage is located. Also make sure all internal links point to the same place.

you should build new links to the new url. let the redirect work for the backlinks you have already pointed to it.
