I'm looking for a program to make a logo/header image for my site, all i can find is ones that do square/rectangle boxes, i'm looking for something to do more an egg laying on its side shape, or something else a little different to the square/rectangle,

and suggestions where to do this?

You're gonna break your head in fireworks and still not get what you want . Photoshop has been the standard for over 20 years . If you want a decent logo use Photoshop .

Unless you're going to be making logos exclusively for the web, then you should make them as vector images. This just means you're not tied to pixels, and can scale it up to be printed on a hot air balloon etc.
For corporate/real world stuff (i.e businesses that exist not just on the web), it's always a good idea to go vector.
That said ... I end up using Photoshop for 90% of the logos I make, simply because I can do it in my sleep, and I know that the logos will NEVER EVER be printed on anything larger than a business card.

1.Try open source/free applications first. You can do A LOT with Inkscape. Check out the Inkscape gallery at deviantART. It's an incredibly good program for the price :)
2.Try GIMP. It's free too. I think it's awful (compared to Photoshop), but you CAN do good stuff with it.
3.Consider paying someone a few dollars to do it for you. When I need my air conditioner fixed, I don't pull it apart and start posting on forums asking how to put it back together again. You don't have to do everything yourself. :)

You should try with Photoshop, search on Google for some basic Photoshop tutorials and you should be able to make some simple, nice looking, header or logo :)

You need licence for photoshop. You can simply get the open source version, in my opinion much better better, Gimp for image manipulation and Ink Scape for vector image that you can use for any tipe of job. Web, printing on a stamp or on a football field.
If you need design... well you can find it verry cheap, you can find it pro-with an avrege of 50$/desisign, or just download one that is allready done and ad some text to it using gimp, inkscape or word :).

Illustrator, Most professional designer use illustrator due to it's versatility and scalability.
