I haven't seen prices like those in the industry and did not see them in the GoDaddy website at all. The cost of general TLD's went up because of the increased fees.
Godaddy is the least to recommend (everything from SOPA/PIPA support to elephant murdering), let alone their prices are only cheap when you apply dozens of coupons and after you fought your way through their sales pages .... If you still want main stream you could go for namecheap.com, alternatively I can really recommend namesilo.com
godaddy, cheaper, and more importantly trustworthy, you must not want to compromise that for some bucks per year ...
namecheap is doing this twitter thing that if they get enough posts they will have a .99 promo for any extension including.com
.COM domain currently demand is low compare to last time because lot of keywords is not available and cause most of domain hunter need to purchase from the owner with higher paid. You can notice that Godaddy and Namecheap start looking on other domain extension to get promo like .net and .info. If you still can get cheap domain from Godaddy and Namecheap, is better to grab it earlier.
