I must concur with the esteemed hrblcantra on this one. That sounds more like a HD.

That sucks even more after just spending £80 on a new battery lol

I'm afraid to ask, but how much would a new HD cost for a laptop?

It's actually funny a battery would make any noise at all, particularly as it should have no moving parts at all.

Does it overheat and maybe lead to problems in close proximity to its bay?

If it runs of the mains ok, it's got to be the battery. And if you used it that much, no wonder you need a new one!

Sorry if I missed a post.

I need to get one soon as while travelling between Old and New England the batetry doesn't last long enough (only around 4 hours). So I'll follow this thread...

By what these guys are saying its going to be the HD :(

The extra battery will come in handy though for those long trips like you said.

Does anything at all happen when you try to power it up? could be more serious than just the HD.

You just need a standard 3.5 in HD for a laptop...

It makes some kind of clunking noise. It started off not too bad but just recently when I tried to power it up it was getting pretty noisy.

I'm one very worried parent! :(

    Only £15 - £30?

You have a key for windows right? Then you just need a CD of whatever version you will use - Home, Pro, MediaCenter - whatever... So long as you have a license key on the bottom of the machine you're fine.

So you need a boot disk, backup of all your files.
    Drivers...
    Software...
Site Password info (This is an important one ;))

And you need to install windows. :)

I'm not even sure if it will load up again. Whats the quickest way to get all the files out of there that I need?

Take it to a specialist -

I had a lappy I spilt coffee on once and for the life of me I couldn't get the info off the drive...

Once I took it to an actual shop I managed to get it all fixed (I *think* it cost me about £50)

If that's not an option, I would suggest getting one of these (Or something similiar), so that once you have the new drive, installed - you can just connect the old one up and drag the data across...

I agree with SEbasic, I really suspect it's more than just replacing the HD.

I know my laptops will power on with no HD connected, everyone is different ofcouse, but still I'd assume something more is broken.

Well I'll try out the hard drive thing. It's not like the screen is dimming or anything, it just starts to freeze and doesnt load stuff up.

Next time I'll be getting a Dell lol

Yes get a usb adapter for your drive, I've used those in the past and they work wonders. As long as the drive has even a little life left it will be well worth it as you can at least attempt to get your most important files off the drive, even if the drive is to the point it wont boot you might beable to at least read the drive to transfer it :) Was going to suggest this myself but see SEbasic already did.

Every system is different, however is the notebook at least posting to start up bios?

I realise not asked to me, but yes appears to be what you'd need. Most notebooks take a standard 2.5" hd, I've used the USB 2.0 external cases on hd's from 8 gigs up to 60 gigs and mine has worked for all of them.

I was under the impression the machine didn't start at all, just made some noise :) If you do get output to the screen does it specify any errors?

Nope it still loads up fine but last time it was really starting to freeze up a lot so I turned it straight off using the off button.
