Start by advertising it with an SEO link on small dating sites/personals/forums etc. that have PR3 or so. They'll do anything for money  Try to get about 10 incoming links within the first week of launch. When a site first starts coming up in Google, it generally gets a burst of actvity that lasts from a month to six weeks. Some cheap incoming links will help boost this.

There are millions of dating sites out there - best way is to advertise to a niche. Try classified ads in local papers, you might be surprised at the response. Plus that way people will be more likely to find others in their immediate area. When people come to a dating site and don't see anyone nearby, they generally leave never to return.

Also local-area forums and sites. Try Craiglist.

Try a bit of affiliate marketing. Offer the same local sites a small fee for signups that create a complete profile. Gauge the fee so that even if they think they're screwing you over by creating fake profiles, they're actually helping you do what you would need to do to get it started anyway

Pushing for search results for a dating site is pretty pointless unless you have craploads of money and/or time to burn

Also - in my experience, AdWords is a waste of money for dating sites.

I found that exchanging links with dating directories/networks brought much more (free) and useful traffic, so try approaching them for a featured listing/banner. Try to look for directories that don't have their own dating sites.

I agree with the above who say adwords is difficult to get a return on. hopefully with microsoft looking to take over yahoo, the advertising prices will get more affordable and make it more worthwhile.

Meantime, I say concentrate on article-writing. The important thing to remember about article writing is to steer clear of press-release style article, which is a mistake many people do. Write an actual story based around "dating", "online dating", etc. I recently wrote an article for a client with a dating site and submitted it to a bunch of article sites. A quick search on Google and Yahoo for the title of that article shows me that the article is spreading around the web nicely after only a few days because other webmasters with dating-related sites reprinted it and so backlinks for my client's site are growing. Plus, along the way, more people will read the article and so his number of visitors will grow too.

Article-writing is to me the most efficient way to promote a site. Everyone loves a good story.
I hope I helped you find the answer to promoting your site.

I've never used article writing for distribution as a means for promotion as I'm most interested in retaining page rank and avoiding problems that *might* arise from links in duplicate content, but basically the idea is very sound & should bring human traffic.

I've done fairly well in the past using keyword-linked articles (important not to go overboard - max 2 links to different pages on your site per article) on other sites of my own.

I should have added that links from directories & exchange is good for short-term traffic, but to avoid long-term problems be sure to go for quality rather than quantity.

There are a good few folk out there who say getting too many links too quickly is a bad thing for Google - plan to build your links steadily with a gradual increase in the rate of new links appearing weekly. Think along the lines of an exponential curve.
