Where the Hell Does Google Get the Number of Backlinks From?

For one of my sites I had about 20 (almost all from Ezine) awhile back, now I just checked and google is only giving me 5 even though I have several hundred article all pointing back to the site at Ezine alone, not to mention other article sites and the very little other marketing I do for it...I mean nothing from there and only FIVE?!

The crazier part is that I now have a PR1 site which I'm pretty thrilled about considering it was a 0 for quite awhile.

But yeah, can anyone explain the backlinks situation to me?

Google only shows a fraction of backlinks to the public, and usually only the ones they think have some quality. You can sign up for their webmaster tools if you want to see all the backlinks.

To show no of baclinks it will take time to indexing in google. Another reason is all backlink checkers are not same.

In all reality take no notice of Google when checking your backlinks. Matt Cutts himself has stated they will never all be listed.

The best place to check what the search engines are seeing is Yahoo!. If you use FireFox then you should get the free seo book toolbar. It has a load of built in functions but show you the numbers of sitelinks and domain links for any page your visit.

They do that on purpose to avoid competitor link analysis (they don't want you getting the same links as your competitors). One site I like using to analyze my sites is http://www.diagnosticoweb.com/ It kind of has everything rolled into one.

^even google webmaster does not show you all the backlinks.

Google will never ever show you all the links, thats their policy, if they happen to show you all the links, other search engines will figure out their PageRank algorithm

    hi mate,

google don't show all the linkbacks infact it considers multiple linkbacks from same site as one, that is the reason why it shows only 5 for you.

Also consider getting yourself a google profile, it would throw your Page rank to PR2 in the next update, and do some good link building - don't depend on article directories only:)
