Where that bad word for poop (hint: starts with an S) came from . . .

Everyone knows that bad bad word for poop. sh..

Well in class my prof apparently knew where it originated. I of course can't verify it but this is what he said:

In the good old days manure used to be transported on the bottom of wooden ships (who wants it where you can smell it).

However, some water would get in and when it mixed with the manure an explosive gas was created. (So ships would literally just blow up at sea).

To avoid this they begin labelling the crates (of manure) with the words or more accurately the accronym:

    Ship High In Transport (SH..)

So . . now you know.

    I call bullshit.

Acronyms didn't become a part of English language formation until well into the 20th century, and the word shit has been around in some form or another for hundreds of years - in fact, one of the earliest literary references to its root term, the Latin scita, comes from the 12th century.

Further blowing this theory out of the sky is the fact that several other languages use a similar word derived from the same root - German Scheiss, Dutch schijt and Norse skita among others - and the modern spelling of 'shit' is only a relatively recent development.

Your professor may be a very intelligent man, but he doesn't know 'ship high in transport' about etymology :)

Same as Fornicating Under Consent of the King, and Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. Both probably made up by some drunk goon in a bar trying to impress people :)

"shit" is a very old word. At one time it used to be the common term in wide use, not a "bad word". Over time it has evolved into becoming the "bad word".
